Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plants in Faridabad, Bhiwandi, and Gurgaon

These solar PV power plants, commissioned in 2016, 2018, and 2020 respectively, utilized polycrystalline, monocrystalline, and half-cut solar PV modules along with string inverters. The project aimed to achieve a plant performance ratio (PR) of 80% and meet ambitious annual energy generation targets.

Challenges Faced
1.Dust Accumulation
•The desert-like environment led to significant dust deposition on solar panels, reducing their efficiency and energy output.
2.Inverter Failures
•Frequent inverter malfunctions caused unscheduled downtime, leading to energy generation losses.
3.Data Monitoring Gaps
•The existing monitoring system lacked advanced analytics, making it difficult to detect and address performance anomalies.

Solutions Implemented
1.Regular Panel Cleaning
•A robotic cleaning system was installed, enabling waterless, automated cleaning at regular intervals, ensuring optimal panel performance while conserving water.
2.Inverter Maintenance Protocols
•A proactive maintenance schedule was developed, incorporating periodic inspections and timely component replacements.
•IoT sensors were deployed for real-time inverter performance monitoring, enabling early detection of potential failures and reducing downtime.
3.SCADA-Based Advanced Monitoring System
•A SCADA system was introduced to monitor plant operations.
•It provided actionable insights, enabling module-level performance tracking and identification of issues, leading to optimized plant efficiency.

Outcomes
1.Enhanced Performance Ratio (PR)
•The plants achieved an average PR of 83%, surpassing the initial target of 80%.
2.Increased Energy Generation
•Annual energy output rose by 6%, contributing significantly to renewable energy goals.
3.Reduced Downtime
•Unscheduled inverter downtime decreased by 40%, ensuring more consistent energy production.
4.Cost Savings
•The combination of robotic cleaning, predictive maintenance, and SCADA-based monitoring reduced overall operations and maintenance (O&M) costs by 15%.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates the importance of addressing operational challenges through innovation and advanced technologies to maximize the efficiency and profitability of solar power plants.
